COLLEGE AT A GLANCE

 

Established in 1978, Margherita College is located in the easternmost part of Assam on the bank of the Burhidehing river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Located on the head quarter of Margherita Sub-division, the college is the easternmost deficit grant-in-aid college in Assam catering to the higher academic needs of the diverse population including several indigenous tribal, tea tribes and other backward ethnic communities..

 

VISION

To build up Margherita College into a CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE emitting light and energies in this entire backward locality, inhabited by various ethnic groups including indigenous tribes.

MISSION

Empowerment of the generation of the entire locality from Powai upto and beyond the boundary of Arunachal Pradesh including the tribal areas of Tirap, Ketetong and Vitar Powai and the numerous settlements of tea-tribe communities scattered all over this area of around five hundred square kilometres, with a view to ensuring humane, equitable and continuous imrpovement of the quality of life around.

 

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

  • To offer educational programmes that cultivate awareness through intellectual and creative disciplines.

  • To foster a learning community composed of students, faculties, staff, governing body, trustees and alumni bonded by a spirit of mutual help and co-operation in the twin processes of search for and cultivation of knowledge and skill.

  • To integrate world wisdom & traditions with modern culture and strive to be non-sectarian and open to all.

  • To undertake study tours, surveys, on-job trainings & demonstration by the students.

  • To provide necessary infrastructural facilities and training for promotion of games & sports, cultural activities, quiz, debates, symposia, group discussions, seminars etc.

  • To organise mass literacy programmes, health camps, environmental awareness programmes, prohibition campaigns and various other community extension service.

  • To provide education and training in vocational areas and short term courses for development of entrepreneurial abilities both at the individual and group levels.

  • To undertake plantation of gradually extinct species of flora, horticultural and medicinal plants of both native and exotic origin in the College campus.

  • To inculcate from those values and qualities which develop a strong, upright and fearless character, ready to take up the challenges of adulthood in society with confidence and dignity.

To achieve these aims, the College endeavors to provide a congenial atmosphere in which the best in each student is brought out. We believe that the ethos of the College should be conducive to the flowering of the students’ personality. The dynamics of the educational process should foster the harmonious growth of the four facets of personality of the growing students – mental, physical, emotional and moral. Keeping these objectives in mind, the college offers co-educational facilities to the generation for their empowerment in all spheres of lives.

 

LIBRARY

 

The college has a Central Library with computer facilities. The students as well as the teachers are amply benefitted by the books, other journals, periodicals and information available in the library. There is provision of a good reading room with Xerox facility. Internet facility is available to the students on need basis. The college library is in process of being upgraded through automation and networking in collaboration with INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad. With the completion of this process the teaching staff and students will be able to take the benefits of Information and Communication Technology in accessing knowledge and resources including the best E-journals, E-books and research papers. Besides, the library has the Book Bank facility for poor and needy students. There are at least 19,000 books, and about 45 journals.
In addition to the Central Library of the college, some individual departments are also maintaining departmental library with collection of books from different sources for their own use.

 

COMPUTER INFRASTRUCTURE

 

The college has a well equipped Computer Centre with state-of-art machines, softwares with other necessary peripherals. The Centre imparts training /education in various periodic courses leading to Diplomas and Certificates in Computer Education at very reasonable rates of fees with the added facilities of highly qualified faculty, continuous power supply and high academic content of the course.

 

LCD & OVERHEAD PROJECTORS

 

The college has LCD and Overhead projectors with other modern necessary infrastructure for organising Shows /Presentations / Seminars / Conferences etc.

 

SPORTS FACILITIES

 

The college campus includes a large playing ground which can accomodate almost all outdoor games.

 

CANTEEN

 

The college has an inhouse campus canteen which provide quality food at competitive rates.

 

LOCATION

 

Margherita College was established in the year 1978 and is located on a sprawling pollution free campus of 26 ( Twenty six ) bighas of land in the North-Eastern state of Assam guarded by the majestic Patkai Hills in the Head quarter of Margherita Sub-Division. Margherita lies exactly 567 kms. east of Guwahati. The Patkai hills which form a gateway of India in the North-East are situated in the South-Eastern corner of Assam between 26.300 North latitude and 95.150 East longitude making the natural boundary between Assam and Burma presently Myanmar. Margherita, the township near Ledo from where the historic Stilwell road connects the North-East region of India with China via Myanmar is the centre of what could be a rich economic zone of South-East Asia. The College is the eastern most Provincialised College in Assam catering to the higher academic needs of a diverse population including several indigenous and ethnic communities.
The College campus is within 50 metres of the National Highway No. 38 and is connected by both road and rail communications. Mohanbari (Dibrugarh) airport is only 100 kms. off from the college.

    identity in Assam and Development" on 3rd and 4th Oct 2008.

2. The Tribal Study Centre, established in 2003, started a museum to show case the different tribal

    artifacts, articles and collations of local and periphery people.

 

2009-2010   

1. A workshop on "Right to Information Act 2005" organized by department of Management, History and

    Education held n 29th June 2009.

2. A Workshop on "Women Empowerment Through Open and Distance Education" organized by and

    sponsored by KKH State Open University Study Centre, Margherita.

3. National Workshop on "Best Practice in Higher Education" organized by IQAC, Margherita college on

    January 26th & 27th 2010.

 

2010-2011

  1. Alumni Meet held on 07.01.2011 was organized by the Alumni Association.

  2. A workshop on "Museology" held on 21.05.2011 organized by the Tribal Study Centre, Margherita College. Two resource persons participated from Dibrugarh University.

  3. Tinsukia District Inter College Quiz Competition was organized by Margherita College students union  at Margherita College on 28.08.2010.

  4. A Career Counseling Programme on Fashion / Interior Designing held on 17.12.2010 at the college premises.

  5. Awareness workshop on disability and their rights under UGC scheme XI plan Programme was held on 13.11.2010 at the college.

  6. All Assam College Teachers Association's Annual Conference was held at Margherita College on 25.05.2011, Tinsukia Zone.

SEMINARS / CONFERENCES / WORKSHOPS

The college has been organising a number of important Seminars, Conferences & Workshops on academic as well as socio-economic and policy related issues like Examination Reforms, Institutional Planning, VAT, SHGs, Nature Conservation, Entrepreneurship, Micro-credit and Prof. Md. Yunus sustainable agriculture & organic farming in the recent time. The college has the distinction of successfully organising an International Conference on “Regional Economic Co-operation among the four Asian Nations : China, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh” in 2004.
A UGC sponsored National Seminar was organised by the Department of Political Science, Margherita college on the topic titled, “Movement for Ethnic Identity in Assam and Development” on 3rd and 4th October, 2008. The college has organised a National level workshop, sponsored by NAAC, Bangaluru on ‘‘Best Practices in Higher Education For Sustinence and Quality Enhancement’’ on January 27th & 28th, 2010. A UGC, NEC & ICSSR sponsored National Seminar was organised by the Dept. of Economics, Margherita College on the topic entitled ‘‘State of Inclusive Growth In the North-East India with Reference to the Emerging National Pattern’’ on 26th & 27th October, 2009.

 

INFORMATION & CAREER GUIDANCE CELL (ICGC)

The ICGC of the college periodically organises career counselling programmes & provides regular guidance and counselling to the students to face the challenges and keep track with today’s rapidly changing career prospects. Every year the cell organises interactive counselling sessions with experts from different field of specializations.

 

GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL CELL

There is a grievance redressal box in the college premises. Students, guardians, employees can lodge complaint addressed to the Principal on genuine matters. Utmost care is taken to provide justice and redress the genuine grievances of the complainants by an effective committee.

 

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION CELL

The college has an Employment Information Cell under the guidence of Senior Professors. The cell develops exposure of the students about employment opportunities available in various organizations, institutions, Govt. departments etc..
